Nihon Kenchiku translates the austerity of confinement into a ritual of stillness. Board-formed concrete, charred cedar and a single shaft of north light compose a volume that asks you to slow down — every threshold deliberate, every shadow earned.
The plan borrows from the cell and the tea house alike: compression then release, a narrow passage opening onto a courtyard of raked gravel. Materials are left raw so time can write on them — the cafe is not a recreation of a prison, but a meditation on what walls hold.
